An Original Venice Craftsman With a Striking Mullet Addition in L.A.

An Original Venice Craftsman With a Striking Mullet Addition in L.A.

After a careful site relocation and renovation, the 1907 cottage now includes a metal-clad extension with floor-to-ceiling windows.

If you’ve ever dreamed of living on one of the famed pedestrian-only streets in Venice, California, the newly listed Historic Modern may be of interest. Located on the aptly named Venice Walk Streets in Los Angeles, the 2,619-square-foot renovated home features four bedrooms, five bathrooms, and an intriguing past.

The Historic Modern features a one-story 1907 Craftsman with a two-story, metal-clad extension at the rear. It is the first of three Modern Venice Homes to be completed by interior design studio Joan Behnke & Associates and award-winning firm Abramson Architects.

The Historic Modern comprises the front portion of an existing 1907 Craftsman bungalow-which was carefully relocated from an adjacent site-as well as a new, two-story rear addition with metal siding and floor-to-ceiling windows. Every detail of the original cottage’s facade was either restored or replaced with similar features. In fact, the facade was certified by the Office of Historic Resources of Los Angeles.

The Venice home offers bright living areas spread across more than 2,000 square feet. The front portion of the residence presents dual sitting rooms, which are connected by an open layout.

After the residence was relocated, interior design studio Joan Behnke & Associates and award-winning firm Abramson Architects designed the contemporary rear extension to "express and explore materiality, shape, and light"-without disrupting the neighborhood’s history and charm. "What makes Venice so unique is that it’s a diverse patchwork of architectural eras and styles," says architect Trevor Abramson. "We challenged ourselves to design something that would embody the old and new."

The great room features a custom-designed fireplace made from Walker Zanger stone.

The front sunroom features windows on three sides and overlooks the Venice Walk Street garden.

A statement pendant hangs gracefully above the dining area near the open-plan chef’s kitchen.

The Historic Modern marks the debut of a three-house collection between the Los Angeles–based interior design and architecture firms. The home presents a refreshing take on the classic Craftsman cottage: Large windows and sliding glass doors bathe the home’s living spaces in natural light, while bold black-and-white tiles provide visual interest. In addition to dual living rooms and a gourmet kitchen with all-new smart appliances, the dwelling also features a private outdoor terrace, as well as a cozy sunroom that overlooks the landscaped front garden.

The kitchen is fitted with all-new Miele appliances, including a flush-mounted induction cooktop, a convection-and-steam oven, and a built-in coffee system.

"Because the Venice lots are so unique-each with its own architectural character-we were excited for the challenge to design in this iconic neighborhood," says interior designer Joan Behnke. "We chose eclectic finishes to celebrate the home’s unique history, such as bold patterns and metalwork. The home is absolutely bespoke."

On the main level, a sun-drenched TV lounge features a V-groove ceiling panel.

In total, the reimagined Craftsman cottage offers four bedrooms and five bathrooms. There is also a ground-level garage and a laundry suite on the second floor. Keep scrolling to see more of the renovated Venice property, which is currently listed for $6,479,000.

Graphic tiles on the staircase pop against the home’s primarily neutral palette.

The bedrooms are located at the rear of the house and feature double-height ceilings.

The principal room bathroom features spa-like amenities, including a Thermasol smart shower that can be activated with your mobile device.

In the principal suite, expansive glass doors open to a private balcony that is hidden behind the original structure’s roofline. The bedroom windows are pre-wired for automatic shades.

Custom vanities with Walker Zanger stone countertops add a sleek touch in the principal bathroom.

On the side of the home, exposed brick from the original 1907 Craftsman juxtaposes matte-black metal from the 2021 addition.
