Apple and Google Discuss Using "Gemini" Artificial Intelligence Platform on iPhones

Informed sources revealed that the American electronics giant, Apple, is conducting talks with Google to use the "Gemini" AI chatbot platform in “iPhone” devices.
These discussions pave the way for a massive agreement that could reshape the global AI technology industry, according to the German News Agency.

Bloomberg News reported that the two companies are engaging in active negotiations, which would allow Apple to use Google's generative AI language models to power some new features to be added to iPhone software this year.

The sources indicated that Apple has also recently discussed with the AI firm "OpenAI," owned by Microsoft, the possibility of using OpenAI tools in Apple devices.

Bloomberg noted that if Apple and Google reach an agreement, it would establish a research partnership between the two companies. For years, Google, which is part of Alphabet Group, has been paying billions of dollars annually to make Google Search the default option on Apple's Safari internet browser, used on devices such as the iPhone and iPad.

The sources mentioned that Apple and Google have not, as of yet, reached any agreement on the terms, the description of the AI collaboration agreement, nor how it would be implemented.

Any deal would provide a significant boost to the "Gemini" AI platform by making it available to billions of potential users. At the same time, it signifies that Apple may not continue to develop its own AI platform as some had hoped. This also raises additional concerns about competition protection and antitrust issues, due to the potential cooperation between the two tech giants.

It's worth mentioning that Apple is preparing a collection of new capabilities as part of the upcoming release of the "iOS 18" operating system based on its own AI models. However, these enhancements will focus on features that operate directly on Apple devices and do not require cloud computing services. Hence, Apple is looking for a partner to handle large-scale generative AI tasks, such as creating images and writing text based on simple user commands.
