Canada Summons Israeli Ambassador Following Gunfire Incident on Diplomatic Delegation in Jenin

The Canadian government expresses grave concerns after Israeli forces fired near a diplomatic team assessing the humanitarian situation in the West Bank.
On May 21, 2025, Canada officially summoned the Israeli ambassador to address a serious incident involving gunfire by Israeli forces directed at a diplomatic delegation visiting the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand confirmed that four Canadian personnel were part of the delegation targeted during the incident.

She expressed relief that no injuries occurred, and emphasized the expectation for a full investigation and accountability from Israeli authorities.

The diplomatic team, comprising representatives from the European Union, Arab nations, and Asian states, was in Jenin to assess the increasing humanitarian crisis in a region that has seen escalated Israeli military operations in recent months.

Following the gunfire, international condemnation of Israel’s actions intensified, alongside renewed scrutiny of its military conduct in the occupied territories.

This event unfolded a day after Canada, in collaboration with France and the United Kingdom, signaled readiness to recognize a Palestinian state as part of a broader peace agreement.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, issued a joint statement condemning Israel’s military campaigns in both Gaza and the West Bank, describing the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “intolerable.” They reiterated their opposition to Israel's military expansion and highlighted concerns over statements by Israeli officials suggesting the potential forced displacement of Gazan civilians.

In their statement, the leaders warned that such actions could breach international humanitarian law, and they reiterated their commitment to a two-state solution while backing efforts for a ceasefire led by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt.

They advised that a ceasefire, alongside the release of hostages and a political framework, remains crucial for achieving lasting peace.

Additionally, the day was marked by an announcement from the United Arab Emirates, which disclosed a new agreement with Israel permitting the entry of urgent humanitarian aid into the besieged Gaza Strip.

This decision was confirmed by Emirati state media following a telephone conversation between UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar.

In parallel, backlash has emerged against popular educational YouTuber Ms. Rachel for vocalizing support for children in Gaza during ongoing military hostilities.

While facing criticism from some quarters, she has maintained her stance advocating for humanitarian relief and drawing attention to the plight of children affected by the conflict.
