Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Shot During Campaign Event

Miguel Uribe, a likely presidential candidate, is in critical condition after being attacked at a public gathering in Bogotá's Fontibón district.
Miguel Uribe, a Colombian senator and potential 2026 presidential candidate from the opposition Democratic Center party, was shot during a campaign event in Bogotá on June 8, 2025. The incident occurred while Uribe was addressing supporters at a public park in the Fontibón district.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that assailants approached Uribe from behind and opened fire.

The senator is currently hospitalized in critical condition, according to his wife, María Claudia Tarazona, who reported that he is 'fighting for his life.'

Initial reports and bystander footage circulating on social media depict Uribe bleeding from the head and receiving immediate assistance from those present at the scene.

The Democratic Center party confirmed the attack, labeling it a 'serious incident,' while no further details on Uribe's medical condition have been provided by the party.

Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that a suspect has been detained in connection with the shooting and indicated that authorities are investigating the possibility of additional individuals involved in the attack.

Minister Sánchez visited Uribe in the hospital and committed to a thorough investigation of the incident.

President Gustavo Petro expressed solidarity with Uribe's family via social media, conveying his sorrow over the situation.

He stated, 'I don’t know how to ease your pain.

It is the pain of a mother lost and a homeland.' During a public address later that day, President Petro revealed that the alleged shooter is a minor and emphasized that the investigation will focus on determining who orchestrated the attack.

He noted that, at this stage, only hypotheses are available and announced that a review of security protocols for the event would be undertaken.

The attack on Uribe has sparked widespread concern regarding political violence in Colombia, a nation still grappling with bouts of unrest and violence linked to its complex social and political history.
