Deadly Attack on Mosque in Southwestern Niger Claims 44 Lives

A targeted assault by suspected militants results in substantial civilian casualties, prompting national mourning.
A tragic assault on a mosque in the village of Fonbita, located in the rural commune of Kokorou in southwestern Niger, resulted in the deaths of at least 44 civilians and left 13 others injured on March 22, 2025. This incident was characterized as a "deliberate strike against civilians" by the Interior Minister of Niger, Mohamed Toumba, during a statement on state television.

The attack was reportedly carried out by militants associated with the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), who stormed the mosque during worship hours, targeting congregants.

Four of the injured individuals are said to be in critical condition, as the government grapples with the fallout from the incident.

The Nigerien Interior Ministry described the assault as a "cowardly and inhumane act" and emphasized the government's commitment to intensifying counter-terrorism operations in the region.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, the Nigerien government instituted a 72-hour national mourning period starting on March 23, during which flags across the nation will be flown at half-mast.

Public events are expected to be subdued as the country collectively mourns the loss of life.

The southwestern region of Niger has experienced an increase in violence in recent years, particularly along borders with Mali and Burkina Faso.

The presence of groups such as ISGS has exacerbated security concerns, as these entities take advantage of instability to conduct raids on villages and engage with security forces.

Although no group has formally claimed responsibility for the recent attack, the attribution to ISGS by the Interior Ministry reflects the group's established operational history in the area.

In response to the rising levels of violence, authorities in Niger have initiated promises for a thorough investigation into the attack and have vowed to implement a robust response aimed at bringing the perpetrators to justice.

The tragic loss of civilian lives in this incident contributes to a rising toll of casualties faced by communities in Niger, which remain under constant threat from extremist violence.
