Dual Identities: African Americans in Ghana Engaged in U.S. Politics Amid Global Turmoil

African Americans in Ghana, inspired by the "Year of Return," support Kamala Harris while navigating dual identities. Meanwhile, Iran's military budget increase and Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon heighten Middle East tensions.
As the U.S. presidential election draws near, African Americans living in Ghana, inspired by the country's 2019 "Year of Return" initiative, stay connected to American politics while building roots in their new community. Among them, shop owner Jimmie Thorne and professor emeritus Delia Gillis express support for Kamala Harris, emphasizing the unique experience of navigating dual identities across two political landscapes.

Meanwhile, tension in the Middle East escalates as Iran proposes a significant increase in its military budget in response to recent exchanges with Israel. Government spokeswoman Fatemeh MoHajjerani announced the budget proposal, highlighting its alignment with ongoing regional conflicts involving Israel and militant groups in Gaza and Lebanon.

In another part of the world, a United Nations report sheds light on the devastating human rights abuses occurring in Sudan's ongoing civil war, particularly at the hands of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The report uncovers sexual violence and the recruitment of child soldiers, adding to the humanitarian crisis that has displaced over 11.3 million people.

The humanitarian crisis deepens in Gaza, where families like Abu Razzak Al-Qassas's have been forced to seek shelter in cemeteries amidst continuous conflict. The war, ignited by a Hamas attack and subsequent Israeli military response, has exacerbated essential shortages and left many residents struggling for survival in makeshift shelters.

Over in Iraq, Amnesty International reveals disturbing accounts of torture experienced by returnees at the Al-Jadaa camp, uncovering abuses such as beatings and forced confessions. Despite documenting these atrocities involving detained Iraqis, Amnesty faces challenges as Iraqi authorities remain silent and deny access under the pretense of security concerns.

Finally, the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon witnesses tragic fatalities from Israeli airstrikes, marking one of the deadliest days amid escalating hostilities. The strikes, aimed at Hezbollah, raise alarms about potential indiscriminate targeting as Lebanese officials and residents express concern over the absence of prior evacuation warnings.
