Ecuador's Prison Crisis, Spain's Weather Woes, and Middle East Tensions: A Global Snapshot

Deadly prison clashes in Ecuador highlight cartel violence amid President Noboa’s anti-crime efforts; meanwhile, Europe braces for another storm as Jordan ramps up aid to Gaza.
Starting with Ecuador, a deadly clash at Litoral Penitentiary in Guayaquil claimed the lives of at least 15 inmates, highlighting the country's struggle with organized crime and cartel-related violence. Since February 2021, over 460 inmates have died amidst President Daniel Noboa's declared war on organized crime, despite continued gang-related incidents both inside and outside prisons.

Meanwhile, in Spain, towns near Valencia are on high alert again as another storm with heavy rains is anticipated. Local authorities, mindful of the devastating floods two weeks ago that took over 200 lives, are taking precautionary measures such as clearing debris and closing schools to prevent further damage.

Over in the Middle East, Jordan’s air force has stepped up its humanitarian efforts by delivering critical supplies to Palestinians in Gaza, responding to aid restrictions that limit land convoys. Jordan has completed 123 airdrops alongside joint efforts with international partners, reflecting a commitment to assisting amidst ongoing challenges.

Shifting to Iran, the country has linked its Shetab banking network to Russia's Mir system, enabling Iranian cards to now function in Russia. This strategic move aims to ease the burden of international sanctions and may expand to include countries with substantial financial connections to Iran.

In Lebanon, artists like Charbel Samuel Aoun are finding ways to persevere creatively amid conflict with Israel, which has heavily impacted the local art scene. Despite the challenges, Aoun continues to produce art using dust from conflict zones while diversifying his income due to the declining art market.

Lastly, in Jerusalem, tensions are rising at the Al-Aqsa compound during the Sukkot festival, with Israeli far-right activities altering the site's status quo and preventing Muslim access. These developments, spearheaded by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, have been met with criticism from Jewish and international groups, stirring concerns over potential violence.
