Empowering Women and Facing Natural and Political Turmoil: East London to Global Crises

Empowering Muslim women through Poplar HARCA's women-only paddle sport program in East London's waterways.
In East London, a women-only paddle sport program by Poplar HARCA has empowered Muslim women like Dilruba Begum and Atiyya Zaman to break cultural barriers and take to the waterways. This initiative, starting with 18 participants and growing to around 70, has led to the founding of London’s first all-female, Muslim-led boat club, providing accessible water sports opportunities for women from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Unfortunately, the weather has been far less cooperative in the U.S., where Storm Helene has wreaked havoc across five states, claiming 63 lives and causing significant destruction. From South Carolina to Virginia, the hurricane left millions without power and necessitated federal emergency declarations, with FEMA deploying over 800 personnel to aid in severe flooding and ongoing rescue efforts.

On a different note, over in Russia, the defense ministry reported successfully downing 125 Ukrainian drones on September 29, 2024, across various regions with no casualties. While incidents included grass fires and damage to residential buildings, there were no injuries, indicating efficient drone interception.

Meanwhile, Nepal continues to grapple with the aftermath of devastating floods and landslides, with the death toll rising to at least 100. With major highways blocked and schools closed, rescue operations are intensifying amid ongoing rains, highlighting the critical need for continued recovery efforts.

Over at the United Nations, Oman's Foreign Minister, Badr Al-Busaidi, called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon and advocated for the establishment of a Palestinian state. Emphasizing justice and a two-state solution, Al-Busaidi underscored Oman's commitment to peace, dialogue, and its Vision 2040 for sustainable development during his UN General Assembly address.

Lastly, in response to the conflict in Lebanon, the World Food Programme (WFP) has initiated an emergency operation to feed one million people. Following intensified Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah, the WFP is urgently distributing food and meals, appealing for $105 million from the international community to sustain this life-saving support through the year.
