Escalating Conflict in Gaza: 85 Reported Casualties Amid European Criticism of Israel

Intensified hostilities in Gaza lead to significant loss of life and rising dissent from European governments over Israel's military actions.
As the conflict in Gaza enters its 64th day, Israeli media has reported a serious incident in which a building collapsed on Israeli soldiers, resulting in injuries to three soldiers, two of whom are in critical condition.

Military censorship in Israel has restricted the dissemination of further information about the event.

On May 20, 2025, as Israeli airstrikes continued, approximately 85 Palestinians were reported dead due to Israeli bombardment, according to medical sources in Gaza.

This news comes alongside claims made by the Islamic Jihad's military wing, Al-Quds Brigades, about their operations targeting Israeli forces in the region, including a reported attack on an Israeli Merkava tank using an RPG in Khan Younis.

The rising intensity of resistance operations has coincided with a surge in Israeli airstrikes and ground operations, resulting in numerous casualties among Israeli soldiers.

Multiple reports indicated that operations in Rafah and Khan Younis have caused significant injuries to Israeli troops despite ongoing aerial assaults from Israel.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has continued to deteriorate, exacerbated by the heavy bombardment that has drastically affected civilian life.

Recent Israeli airstrikes have hit a school sheltering displaced people in Beit Lahiya, resulting in several casualties, among whom were women and children.

Medical officials now report over 3400 fatalities and approximately 9600 injuries since hostilities resumed on March 18, 2025.

The Israeli military's operation has faced increasing scrutiny from European governments.

Criticism has mounted particularly from France and the UK, with leaders condemning Israel's military strategies as excessive and harmful to civilians.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced the country’s commitment to recognizing a Palestinian state, emphasizing the need for immediate humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

Recent statements from the British government indicated a suspension of trade negotiations with Israel over its ongoing military operations.

This aligns with joint condemnations issued by leaders from France, the UK, and Canada, who collectively called for an end to hostilities in Gaza and greater access for humanitarian aid as the situation remains dire.

Negotiations in Doha between Israeli representatives and Hamas reportedly remain stalled, with both sides expressing irreconcilable differences, impeding potential agreements for a ceasefire.

The Qatari government has reiterated its commitment to mediating a resolution, but fears of further conflict abound as military actions escalate.

Domestic pushback in Israel is also evident, with opposition voices questioning the government’s military strategy.

Recently, statements made by Israeli politicians highlighting civilian casualties have sparked debate within the country regarding the ethics of the ongoing operations.

As the situation develops, monitoring continues on the international community’s response, particularly concerning humanitarian viewpoints and potential consequences for Israel from ongoing military actions.
