Israeli airstrikes result in casualties in southern Lebanon amid ongoing tensions and ceasefire violations.
Israeli forces conducted a series of airstrikes across southern Lebanon on May 29, 2025, resulting in the deaths of at least two individuals and injuring several others.
This wave of strikes marks a significant escalation in hostilities and breaches existing ceasefire agreements established in the wake of the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.
The strikes reportedly targeted key areas in southern Lebanon, including towns such as Bnaafoul in the Sidon district and the vicinity of Houmine al-Tahta, affecting regions southeast of Sidon.
Reports indicate that at least six airstrikes lit up the night sky, primarily aimed at Hezbollah's arms depots and strategic border crossings with Syria.
Additional areas hit by the bombardment included Jezzine, Marjeyoun, al-Bissariyeh, and Berghoz, extending to regions north of the Litani River—designated as a sensitive zone in the longstanding ceasefire agreement.
Israeli Army Radio disclosed that prior to the air raids, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) attempted to contact the Lebanese Army to intervene, and when no response was received, they proceeded with the strikes.
Witnesses reported seeing low-flying Israeli warplanes and drones in various locations throughout southern Lebanon, which has raised concerns about the potential for further escalation along the already tense Lebanon-Israel border.
In a related development, intense violence was also reported in the Gaza Strip, where Israeli airstrikes resulted in the deaths of at least 70 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.
The strikes have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the region, leading to the evacuation of Al-Awda Hospital in northern Gaza due to an evacuation order, leaving the healthcare system increasingly overwhelmed.
Amid these escalating violence and humanitarian concerns, diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire are reportedly ongoing.
The White House announced that Israel had accepted a ceasefire proposal put forth by U.S. President
Donald Trump, which was conveyed to Hamas by Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff.
Discussions with Hamas on this proposal are still taking place, and the situation remains fluid as fighting continues on the ground.
