EU Reaffirms Support for Ukraine Amid Global Tensions; UN Warns of Famine Crisis in Gaza

EU's Borrell reassures Ukraine of support amid Trump's victory; UN warns of impending famine in Gaza due to military actions.
In light of Donald Trump's recent election victory, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell visited Kyiv to reassure Ukraine of Europe's steadfast support—even as uncertainties loom regarding U.S. policies—stressing that the majority of EU member states remain committed to aiding Ukraine.

Meanwhile, a UN-backed report has sounded the alarm on an impending famine crisis in northern Gaza, where escalating violence and disrupted food supplies threaten to plunge 345,000 people into severe food insecurity by April 2025, exacerbated by Israel's military actions following Hamas attacks.

In response to these tensions, Israeli air strikes on Gaza have resulted in the tragic deaths of 14 Palestinians, targeting shelter sites including schools and tents, as part of the ongoing conflict with Hamas and Hezbollah, initiated last October after a major Hamas assault on Israel.

Over in Amsterdam, the Dutch government has launched an investigation into potential oversights of threats, following antisemitic attacks on Israeli football fans that left five injured, with heightened security measures and a ban on demonstrations now in effect amid rising antisemitic incidents linked to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Shifting focus to Asia, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto seek to strengthen bilateral ties, as they embark on a dialogue to foster economic cooperation and chart new avenues for collaboration, even as the region contends with persistent maritime disputes.

Lastly, in Odesa, a Russian drone strike sadly claimed one life and injured 13 others, contributing to the ongoing toll of Moscow's aerial offensive against Ukrainian cities, as the conflict nears a significant milestone, highlighting the sustained strain on Ukraine's civilian populace despite claims from Russia that civilians are not targeted.
