Four Dead as Starving Palestinians Breach UN Food Warehouse Amid Growing Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

Desperate crowds in Gaza overwhelmed a UN warehouse as the ongoing blockade exacerbates food shortages, leading to escalating violence and fatalities.
On May 28, 2025, four individuals lost their lives after large crowds of Palestinians surged into a United Nations food warehouse in Deir al-Balah, Gaza, following prolonged shortages of aid.

The region has been under an 11-week siege, compounded by a stringent Israeli blockade, dramatically increasing food insecurity and malnutrition among the population.

Medics and humanitarian workers have reported rising malnutrition, with bakeries operated by the UN World Food Programme closed due to a lack of cooking gas, and food prices soaring in local markets.

The chaos surrounding food distribution was exacerbated by the launch of a new system, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), aimed at replacing traditional aid operations, which have been criticized for their effectiveness.

On a recent occasion, following the opening of a distribution point in Rafah, Israeli forces opened fire, prompting panic among civilians.

Subsequently, at least one person was killed and dozens were injured, marking a tumultuous start to the GHF's operations.

Concerns have been raised about the GHF's ability to operate independently, following the resignation of its executive director who cited the organization's incapacity to adhere to impartial humanitarian principles.

The ongoing crisis has led to urgent warnings that vulnerable populations, particularly children and the elderly, are experiencing severe hunger.

In a separate incident on the same day, the UN's World Food Programme reported that four people died when large groups of hungry individuals broke into its food supply warehouse in central Gaza.

This unrest underscores the dire state of the humanitarian situation, with many families struggling to find food amid escalating prices and inadequate supplies.

The UN asserts that approximately 600 trucks of supplies are necessary daily to alleviate the food crisis in Gaza, yet only a fraction has entered since the blockade was tightened in early March.

Although Israeli authorities announced that around 1,050 trucks have entered the region since easing the blockade earlier this month, this level of aid has proven insufficient.

The GHF claimed to have distributed approximately 462,000 meals to 50,000 individuals, accounting for only about two percent of Gaza's population and reinforcing perceptions of the operation being inadequate in scope relative to the widespread need.

Recent comments from Israeli officials downplay the severity of the famine situation, while humanitarian organizations condemn the new aid distribution mechanism as inconsistent with fundamental humanitarian principles due to alleged Israeli government involvement in its establishment.

The impact of this humanitarian crisis on the population of Gaza is extensive, with multiple reports of urgent health concerns.

The Palestinian Health Ministry recently announced that treatment for cancer patients has halted, affecting thousands amid drastically reduced medical resources due to the blockade.

Approximately 11,000 cancer patients in Gaza are currently without access to essential treatments, with many facing severe health risks without the provision of necessary medications and diagnostic equipment.

The worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to elicit condemnation from various humanitarian organizations, as they call attention to the profound and immediate needs of the population amidst the ongoing conflict.
