Global Crises Spotlight: UN Shielding Airstrip in South Sudan, Ceasefire Calls in Gaza, Tragedy in Ukraine, and Territorial Disputes in Somalia

Pakistani engineers protect South Sudan airstrip from floods, ensuring aid delivery to IDP camp. Arab foreign ministers call for ceasefire in Gaza and end to Israeli strikes on Lebanon at UN meeting.
In Bentiu, South Sudan, a critical airstrip has been shielded from devastating floods by a five-meter-high wall, thanks to the efforts of Pakistani military engineers as part of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). This airstrip is vital for delivering food and supplies to a nearby camp that houses 200,000 internally displaced people (IDPs), who are cut off from road access due to flooding.

Shifting our focus to New York City, Arab foreign ministers at a UN Security Council meeting made an urgent appeal for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an end to Israeli strikes on Lebanon. This call for peace, steered by Algeria and backed by global diplomats, underscored passionate pleas from Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres against the ongoing violence.

Keeping the spotlight on the United Nations, Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti addressed the General Assembly, criticizing the international community's silence on Palestinian suffering while reaffirming Tunisia’s staunch support for Palestinian independence with East Jerusalem as its capital. Nafti also emphasized the need for UN reforms and highlighted urgent issues, stressing stability in Libya and advocating for dialogue in Sudan.

Turning to Eastern Europe, tragedy struck in Sumy, northeastern Ukraine, where Russian forces bombarded a medical center on September 28, 2024, killing eight and injuring 11 amidst an evacuation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the targeting of civilian structures, while Ukrainian air forces intercepted 69 out of 73 Russian drones during the assault.

Back in the UN General Assembly, Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre accused Ethiopia of violating Somalia’s territorial integrity by colluding with a Somali separatist group. Barre urged the global community to address Ethiopia’s attempts to annex Somali land under the guise of securing sea access, which he argues threatens Somalia’s sovereignty and fosters secessionist movements.

Lastly, amid mounting tensions in the Middle East, Hamas declared it would intensify its resistance against Israel following the death of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike. The ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, which has led to 41,500 deaths and extensive displacement in Gaza, is set to witness heightened retaliation efforts from militant groups.
