Global Snapshot: Repression in Tunisia, Islamist Gains in Jordan, Accountability Demands by Biden, Rocket Attack in Iraq, Russian Naval Exercises, and Violence Against Polio Workers in Pakistan

Tunisian lawyer sentenced for criticizing President Kais Saied; Jordan's Islamist Action Front gains parliamentary seats.
Tunisian lawyer and media figure Sonia Dahmani has been sentenced to eight months in prison for criticizing President Kais Saied, marking a significant moment in the broader repression under Saied's rule. Initially sentenced to a year, Dahmani appealed, and her case will now be referred to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

Meanwhile, in Jordan, the moderate Islamist opposition group, the Islamist Action Front (IAF), has gained up to a fifth of the parliamentary seats amid public anger over Israel's war in Gaza. Despite these gains, traditional tribal and pro-government factions still dominate, with King Abdullah retaining most of the ruling powers.

Over to the United States, President Joe Biden has demanded "full accountability" after the death of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, an American protester fatally shot by Israeli troops. Biden stressed that Israel must prevent similar incidents and ensure ongoing access to investigations, amidst rising scrutiny over violent attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians, leading to US sanctions on some Israelis involved in the settler movement.

Shifting gears to Iraq, a U.S. diplomatic facility in Baghdad was attacked with rockets during Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit. No casualties were reported, but Kataib Hezbollah claimed the attack was aimed at disrupting Pezeshkian’s agenda which included signing bilateral agreements and addressing regional issues.

In other news, Russia has conducted its largest naval exercises since the Soviet era, with Tu-160 bombers flying over the Barents and Norwegian seas as part of "Ocean-2024." Involving over 90,000 servicemen and hundreds of vessels and aircraft, the exercises span multiple seas including the Pacific, Arctic, and Mediterranean.

Finally, in Pakistan, tragic news as gunmen killed a police officer and a polio worker during a door-to-door vaccination campaign in Bajur, signaling continued militant opposition to anti-polio efforts. The attack, following a recent roadside bomb in South Waziristan, underscores the ongoing challenges faced in eradicating polio in the region.
