Global Tensions Rise: France Deploys Carrier for Lebanon Evacuations, Iran Faces Deadly Flash Flood, and NATO's New Chief Stresses Unity

France deploys helicopter carrier to evacuate citizens from Lebanon amid Israel-Hezbollah conflict; flash flood in Iran kills 15 mostly Afghan nationals.
In response to escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, France is deploying the Dixmude helicopter carrier to the eastern Mediterranean. The carrier will arrive within five to six days to assist in potential evacuations of around 20,000 French citizens from Lebanon, with Cyprus and possibly Turkey being considered as sanctuary locations.

Meanwhile, a flash flood in Jiroft, in Iran's southern Kerman province, has tragically claimed 15 lives, mostly Afghan nationals. This incident, exacerbated by climate change, highlights the increasing extreme weather patterns in Iran, which has endured severe floods and droughts over the past decade.

In Europe, NATO's new chief Mark Rutte, former Dutch prime minister, emphasized unity and defense amid global tensions, as he assumed leadership in Brussels. Underlining the importance of supporting Ukraine, raising defense spending, and strengthening Asia Pacific ties, Rutte aims to maintain alliance unity and bolster NATO's collective defense.

In Southeast Asia, a devastating school bus fire in Bangkok's Pathum Thani province during a school trip has left 25 people feared dead. The bus, carrying 44 passengers, caught fire following a suspected tire explosion, with ongoing rescue operations yet to account for all individuals on board.

As Typhoon Krathon approaches, Taiwan has mobilized nearly 40,000 troops and evacuated 13 sailors from a distressed vessel in anticipation of heavy rescue efforts. Authorities in Kaohsiung have also canceled flights and closed rail lines, while residents brace for the storm's impact, drawing parallels to the destructive Typhoon Thelma in 1977.

Over in South Korea, the nation showcased its Hyunmoo-5 missile, capable of reaching North Korea's underground bunkers, during the Armed Forces Day ceremony. President Yoon Suk Yeol issued a stern warning against North Korean nuclear threats while demonstrating the readiness of the South Korea-US alliance in front of around 340 military assets, as North Korea condemned the US presence and vowed to enhance its nuclear capabilities.
