Cairo hosts discussions on potential ceasefire and prisoner exchange in Gaza
On Saturday, Hamas representatives plan to visit Cairo to discuss a potential ceasefire in Gaza.
A Hamas official, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the discussions, confirmed that the delegation would meet with Egyptian officials to explore ideas for a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange in the Gaza Strip.
This development follows the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, a Hamas ally, which took effect two days earlier.
The United States has announced a diplomatic initiative involving Qatar, Turkey, and Egypt aimed at securing a Gaza ceasefire and the release of hostages captured during the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel.
This assault resulted in 1,207 deaths, mostly civilians, according to Israeli official tallies compiled by AFP.
In retaliation, Israel's military operations have led to 44,363 deaths in Gaza, as reported by the territory's health ministry, a figure the United Nations considers to be reliable.
Furthermore, the October 7 attack saw the capture of 251 hostages, with 97 still in Gaza, including 34 who the Israeli army declares are deceased.
A previous ceasefire in November 2023 resulted in the release of around 100 hostages by Hamas in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
