Honor Magic V2 Phone: A Technological Innovation for Foldable Phones
Thinner than single-screen phones with a sleek design, light weight, and a battery with a superior charge.
If you thought innovation in foldable phones had reached its limits, the Honor Magic V2 will surprise you with its advanced technological features across all aspects while significantly reducing its thickness at the same time. Middle East Newspaper tested the phone before its launch in the Arab region on February 8th and here is a summary of the experience.
Innovative Design
The phone's design is extremely elegant, representing a revolution in the foldable phone industry standards regarding thickness and weight. The device weighs only 231 grams, with a thickness of 4.7 millimeters when unfolded and 9.9 millimeters when folded, which is less than one centimeter. High-quality manufacturing increases its durability, especially since it's made from a titanium hinge used in aircraft manufacturing and steel to strike a balance between lightness and sturdiness.
The hinge is 42 percent lighter than stainless steel while shock-resistant steel is a key element in the main body manufacturing of the hinge to balance thickness, durability, and a strong, slim design. The hinge is engineered using mechanisms and tools that significantly reduce the internal space and total thickness, capable of withstanding more than 400,000 folding actions—meaning the screen can be folded 100 times daily for 10 years without affecting the hinge or leaving any gaps between the screen edges.
The phone also introduces a cutting-edge, extremely thin cooling system, utilizing a multi-layered approach with different materials including an ultra-thin vapor chamber, high-conductivity graphite, thermal gel, and copper flakes to maintain optimal performance levels and ensure long-term durability. Despite the phone's thinness and limited space for air circulation for cooling, the entire cooling system spans 29,000 square meters, a 12.5 percent increase compared to the previous series.
The phone's screen uses multi-curved "nano crystal" glass technology, adding a sense of security and durability and providing ten times the resistance against falls compared to regular glass.
Superior Imaging Capabilities
The phone offers five cameras: three rear and two front-facing. The main wide-angle 50-megapixel rear camera features a large aperture with a focal length of 1.9 and a dedicated sensor for more light, allowing for clearer images with better exposure and a richer dynamic color range. Additionally, the upgraded sensor enhances target detection and focusing mechanisms for high-resolution, detailed shots effortlessly even in challenging lighting conditions like low light or backlight.
The second 50-megapixel ultra-wide rear camera supports an exceptionally wide field of view for capturing stunning, detailed panoramic shots of landscapes. The third rear camera specializes in zoom photography with a 20-megapixel resolution and a 2.4 aperture, offering high-quality imaging results and supporting up to 40x digital zoom to bring subjects closer to the user.
For the two front cameras, each has a 16-megapixel resolution, one located when the screen is open and the other when it is closed. Both utilize a 2.2 aperture for high-quality and enhanced image clarity. Each front camera can clearly display the target's facial features with its detail recognition capabilities.
Artificial Intelligence Support
The phone features AI Motion Sensing Capture technology, enhanced by an AI network trained on more than 270,000 images, enabling the camera to accurately identify different scenarios, smartly capture essential moments, and help users take perfect shots automatically. This feature is suitable for capturing live performances and sports events due to its ability to intelligently detect facial expressions, like a smile, and body positions such as jumping, ensuring the best shots are taken even when the subject is moving.
This technology improves startup speed, focusing speed, shutter response, and shooting speed compared to the previous generation to capture any scene in fractions of a second. The phone offers a motion photography mode for effortlessly capturing individual, group, or environmental shots.
Useful Features
Middle East Newspaper visited Honor's research centers in China and learned about the phone’s electronic circuit development, including its battery. Work was done on developing an exclusive dual battery (on each side of the phone behind the screen) using silicon and carbon, allowing for a high-capacity charge with only half the size, significantly reducing the phone's thickness while maintaining advanced cooling.
The battery's thickness is only 2.72 millimeters, offering an innovative electrochemical system that extends its life by 40 percent compared to the previous version, alongside a low-voltage assembly technology producing more power at the same voltage level compared to other graphite battery systems.
The phone features an external 6.43-inch screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio and a screen-to-body ratio of 91.2 percent, outperforming competing phones that offer long, narrow screens when folded. The inner 7.92-inch display when opened transforms the phone into a tablet, ideal for consuming content, playing games, and reading and writing. The screen is equipped with OLED LTPO technology, supporting 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut. It delivers crisp images even under bright sunlight with brightness levels up to 2500 nits.
Furthermore, the screen's PWM dimming technology operates at up to 3840 Hz to reduce eye strain and ensure a comfortable viewing experience even during prolonged use. It minimizes screen brightness fluctuations and flickering, resulting in reduced eye strain and a comfortable viewing experience even in low light conditions. The automatic night mode adjusts the screen throughout the day, displaying warmer colors during the day and softer colors at night. It reduces colors that affect the body's circadian rhythm to boost melatonin levels in the body by lowering the screen light's impact on hormone production, promoting better sleep quality.
Another impressive feature is the phone's AI Privacy Call technology, which prevents sound leakage from the speaker during a conversation, allowing for more private phone calls. The AI Directional Sound technology adjusts the incoming volume to suit different environments and prevents sound leakage during private calls. Additionally, the Sound Energy Spatial Control technology generates opposing sound waves to prevent sound leakage even in quiet environments.
The Parallel Space feature offers secure isolation and separate storage for work and personal data, maintaining privacy and organization. Users can run apps independently as if having a second phone integrated into one, enhancing the integration between productivity and flexibility for managing work and personal apps.
Finally, the Magic Text feature intelligently recognizes text content in an image and converts it into editable text, greatly enhancing productivity. This feature allows for direct use of important information, such as calling and typing texts or saving a number from a photo.
Technical Specifications
The internal display measures 7.92 inches, with a resolution of 2156x2344 pixels, a pixel density of 402 PPI, and a refresh rate of 120 Hz, while the external display measures 6.42 inches, with a resolution of 1060x2376 pixels, a pixel density of 402 PPI, and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. This means the screens offer more frames per second for smoother motion elements. The screen supports HDR 10 Plus, displaying up to 1.07 billion colors.
