Iran’s Execution Rate Skyrockets to a Grim Nine-Year High

UN Reports Surge in Death Penalty Cases Amidst Human Rights Concerns as Iran Executes Over 900 in 2024
The Islamic Republic of Iran has reportedly executed 901 individuals in the year 2024, according to alarming statistics released by the United Nations.

This figure represents the highest annual total in nearly a decade and marks a 6% increase from 2023's tally of 853 executions.

The escalation in capital punishments has sparked global outcry and renewed criticisms over Iran’s use of the death penalty, particularly by the UN human rights chief, Volker Türk.

Among those executed were individuals convicted of drug-related offences, dissidents linked to the 2022 protests, an appalling rise in women executions, and ethnic minorities, notably the Kurdish population.

Türk has urged the Iranian authorities to halt further executions and consider a moratorium on capital punishment with the ultimate goal of abolition.

He emphasized that the death penalty contradicts the fundamental right to life and carries an unacceptable risk of wrongful executions.

The report highlighted severe implications for ethnic and religious minorities, echoing findings from the UN's August fact-finding mission that underscored disproportionate impacts since the eruption of the "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests in 2022.

These uprisings were ignited by the tragic demise of a young Kurdish woman in police custody.

International human rights organizations, including the Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) and the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), corroborate these execution figures.

Their reports have also shed light on the harsh realities faced by those on death row—women like Leila Ghaemi, executed after a personal tragedy, and Parvin Mousavi, sentenced for drug-related crimes.

The international community’s attention is increasingly turned towards Iran, as the state accounted for a staggering 74% of all recorded executions globally in 2023, excluding China where data remains classified.

As human rights advocates continue to press for reform, the Iranian government faces mounting pressure to align its practices with international law and human rights standards.
