Iranian court increases Tataloo's sentence from five years in prison to death, as reported by local media.
An Iranian court has sentenced Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo, widely recognized as Tataloo, to death following a conviction on charges of blasphemy.
This development comes after the country's supreme court accepted the prosecutor’s objection to the initial five-year jail term.
Responding to the appeal, the court reopened the case, culminating in a death sentence for 'insulting the prophet,' specifically referring to the revered Islamic prophet Muhammad, as reported by the reformist newspaper Etemad.
The legal proceedings are not yet concluded, as the sentence remains open to appeal processes.
Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo, a prominent figure in the Iranian music scene, has been detained since being handed over from Turkey to Iran in December 2023. Turkish authorities transferred him following his residency in Istanbul since 2018.
In addition to his recent sentencing, Tataloo had also been sentenced to ten years for alleged promotion of prostitution.
He faces additional charges of disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic and publishing 'obscene content.'
Tataloo's career, marked by his fusion of rap, pop, and R&B, drew attention for both his music and his persona, including being heavily tattooed.
His influence extended beyond music; conservative Iranian politicians once sought his collaboration to appeal to the nation's younger, more liberal demographics.
Notably, he held a televised meeting in 2017 with then-ultra-conservative Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, a figure who later perished in a helicopter crash.
Amid Tataloo’s contentious history, a notable moment was his public support for Iran’s nuclear program, showcased in a 2015 song.
This support came prior to the unraveling of the agreement during the presidency of
Donald Trump in the United States in 2018.
