Israel plans to expand its military activities in Rafah, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced during talks with a US adviser. Rafah is seen as a significant Hamas stronghold, and the conflict focuses on dismantling Hamas and rescuing hostages. Concerns have been raised about mass civilian displacement, with the UN estimating 810,000 people have fled since early May.
Israel plans to extend its military activities in Rafah, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced on Monday during discussions with a senior aide to US President
Joe Biden.
This decision comes amidst warnings about potential mass civilian casualties resulting from extensive operations in the southern Gazan city.
Rafah, located at the Gaza-Egypt border, is seen by Israel as a significant Hamas stronghold.
The ongoing conflict has been persisting for over seven months.
Israel initiated orders on May 6 for Palestinian civilians to evacuate parts of Rafah and commenced troop and tank movements.
According to Gallant’s office, the intention is to dismantle Hamas and rescue hostages, believed to be held there since an attack on October 7.
Concerns have been raised by Western powers and Egypt about the well-being of displaced Palestinians in the region.
The UNRWA estimates that around 810,000 people have fled Rafah since the evacuation orders.
Although there was no immediate response from the US regarding these talks, Gallant assured of measures for civilian evacuation and humanitarian aid.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces have reportedly found numerous tunnels leading from the Sinai, which could indicate cross-border smuggling activities involving Egypt.
