Israeli Air Strikes Target Hezbollah Positions in Southern Lebanon

Military actions follow an evacuation warning as tensions persist along the Israeli-Lebanese border.
BEIRUT: On Thursday, Israeli air strikes targeted a building in southern Lebanon amidst ongoing tensions with Hezbollah, following an evacuation order issued by Israel’s military in anticipation of possible action against the militant group.

The Israeli military maintained its operations in Lebanon, despite a ceasefire established in November, which aimed to halt extensive hostilities that had spanned over a year, including a period of full-scale conflict.

While Israel did not confirm the specific attack on the southern town of Toul, it announced multiple strikes aimed at Hezbollah sites, resulting in the death of one militant, identified by Israeli sources.

The Lebanese state-operated National News Agency (NNA) reported that the Israeli forces had hit a building used by Hezbollah militants in Toul and noted that an evacuation was recommended for residents living in the vicinity.

In an urgent alert, the Israeli military issued a map illustrating a 500-meter radius around the targeted structure, indicating the proximity of residences to Hezbollah facilities.

The communication urged residents to evacuate promptly, identifying Hezbollah as a terrorist entity.

Reports from Toul indicated that there were no immediate casualties following the air strike.

Additionally, the Israeli military stated it had successfully eliminated a member of Hezbollah's Radwan Force in the Rab El Thalathine area, located approximately 17 kilometers southeast of Toul.

The NNA referred to a casualty as a “martyr” in the same region, though no identification was provided.

Alongside the strike in Toul, Israeli forces targeted what was described as a Hezbollah military site containing rocket launchers and other weaponry in the Bekaa Valley, as well as various sites associated with the organization in southern Lebanon.

According to a military statement from Israel, the presence of weaponry and ongoing Hezbollah activities in the area contravene the terms of the ceasefire agreement established post-conflict.

The military asserted that it would persist in efforts to mitigate any threats posed by Hezbollah, which it claims is attempting to restore its military capabilities.

Under the November ceasefire agreement, Hezbollah was expected to withdraw its forces north of the Litani River and dismantle military infrastructure south of it.

Meanwhile, Israel was to retract its forces from Lebanon; however, it has since retained military presence in five areas deemed strategic.

The Lebanese army has commenced operations in the south, focused on dismantling Hezbollah’s military infrastructure.

The ceasefire was established under a UN Security Council resolution, stipulating that only Lebanese troops and UN peacekeepers should bear arms in southern Lebanon and calling for the disarmament of all non-state armed groups.
