Israeli Military Transfers Forces to Gaza Amid Intensifying Conflict

Israeli Military Transfers Forces to Gaza Amid Intensifying Conflict

As tensions escalate, the Israeli Defense Forces prepare for operations in Gaza while Houthi militants target Ben Gurion Airport.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the mobilization of its 36th Armored Division for potential operations in the Gaza Strip, transitioning from recent activities in Lebanon.

The division is preparing to operate under the Southern Command following an extended military campaign in northern Israel over the past months.

Israeli media reported that the deployment of the 36th Division to the Gaza border aims to exert pressure for a negotiated resolution regarding prisoner exchanges.

The political focus remains on renewing a ceasefire, according to official statements.

The 36th Division is noted to be the largest active armored division within the IDF, established in 1954, and includes four brigades: Golani Brigade, 7th Brigade, 188th Brigade, and 282nd Brigade, each with specific operational mandates.

Since the resurgence of military actions in Gaza, hundreds of Palestinians have reportedly been killed, with injuries exceeding a thousand, a majority of whom are women and children.

In early March 2025, Israel concluded the first phase of an agreement allowing limited humanitarian aid into Gaza for a span of 42 days; however, it subsequently reclosed border crossings to humanitarian assistance amid ongoing hostilities.

The Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, faces accusations of not fulfilling commitments associated with humanitarian relief in favor of securing the release of more Israeli captives.

On the international stage, Houthi militants in Yemen have escalated their offensive, targeting Ben Gurion Airport for the fourth time in 72 hours.

The group claimed responsibility for firing a hypersonic ballistic missile dubbed 'Falasteen-2' at the airport located near Tel Aviv, disrupting air traffic for over 30 minutes.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree stated their offensive aims to support the Palestinian cause and will continue until hostilities in Gaza cease.

According to the IDF, an incoming missile was intercepted before reaching Israeli airspace, amid reports of moderate injuries to two individuals during sirens in Tel Aviv.

Sirens were activated across the greater Tel Aviv area, causing incoming flights to be diverted.

In conjunction with military developments, Israeli forces reported the killings of key Hamas figures, including the deputy commander of the Gaza Brigade and the commander of the Shuja'iyya Battalion.

The IDF indicated that these commanders played significant roles in planning operations against Israeli forces and managing military preparedness during the ongoing conflict.

Reportedly, operations in Gaza resumed following a breach of a ceasefire with Hamas.

As of mid-March 2025, the ongoing conflict in Gaza is characterized by a high civilian toll estimated at over 50,000 casualties, according to local health authorities, predominantly affecting women and children.

Amid these events, there is rising concern within Israeli military ranks about increasing dissent and a potential decline in compliance among reservists to military service, as the conflict continues to impact both military and civilian life.
