Israeli Opposition Leader Calls for End to War, Claims Government Does Not Represent Majority

Yair Golan, leader of the Democratic Party, demands an immediate halt to the conflict in Gaza, citing a disconnect between the current administration and the Israeli public.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Golan called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza on Monday, asserting that the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu no longer represents a majority of the Israeli populace.

Golan, who is the head of the Democratic Party and a former deputy chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces, made his remarks ahead of an expected parliamentary vote that the opposition hopes will lead to new general elections.

Speaking to reporters, Golan stated, "Today, the Israeli government does not represent the vast majority of Israelis." He emphasized the urgent need for Israel to end the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for over 20 months since the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023.

Golan's party, which includes various left-wing factions, holds only four of the 120 seats in the Knesset.

Nevertheless, smaller parties can play a pivotal role in forming alliances to achieve a majority.

He claimed that the current right-wing government is a threat to democracy in Israel.

Echoing sentiments of many, Golan purported to represent those who wish to 'save Israeli democracy' from what he described as a 'corrupt future' influenced by a small, radical nationalist faction within Israeli society.

He indicated that the majority of Israelis desire to maintain Israel as a homeland for the Jewish people while also ensuring it remains a free, equal, and democratic state.

Golan asserted that a significant proportion of Israelis want an immediate end to the war in Gaza and the return of all hostages in a single exchange deal.

He expressed confidence that a hostage exchange could be arranged within days, stating, "I believe that by ending the war and securing the release of the hostages, we can build a viable alternative to Hamas in the Gaza Strip."

Recently, Golan faced backlash for comments suggesting that "a rational state does not kill children as a hobby." On the same day, he noted that most Israelis support compelling ultra-Orthodox Jews (Haredim) to enlist in the military, a contentious issue that has sparked tensions between Netanyahu and the extremist parties within his government, as threats of governmental collapse loom if an agreement is not reached this week.

Some opposition parties are pressing to include a bill for dissolving the Knesset on the agenda for a general session on Wednesday, seeking to leverage discontent among the Haredi community.

Golan concluded by stating, "The vast majority want new elections as soon as possible."
