Israeli Prime Minister Confirms Death of Hamas Chief Mohammad Sinwar

Netanyahu announces the killing of Hamas leader as Israel intensifies military operations in Gaza.
JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on May 28, 2025, that Israel had killed Mohammad Sinwar, the chief of Hamas in Gaza and one of the group's most wanted figures.

Sinwar was the younger brother of the deceased Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

Netanyahu made the announcement during a session of the Knesset, Israel's parliament, stating, 'We eliminated Mohammad Deif, (Ismail) Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Sinwar.'

Prior to this announcement, Netanyahu indicated on May 21 that it was likely Sinwar had died in an Israeli strike that targeted a hospital in southern Gaza earlier this month.

The Prime Minister described recent developments as a 'dramatic turn toward a complete defeat of Hamas.' In conjunction with military efforts, Israel is also reportedly taking control of food distribution in Gaza, a process aided by a US-backed organization.

Hamas has not yet confirmed the death of Mohammad Sinwar.

On May 26, Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir stated that Hamas had lost numerous assets, including its command and control center.

Mohammad Sinwar rose to prominence within Hamas after the Israeli military operation that resulted in the death of his brother Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in combat last year.

Yahya Sinwar was considered a key architect of the October 2023 assault on Israel that initiated the ongoing conflict, and he subsequently became the overall leader of Hamas after the death of his predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, in Iran.

The announcement of Sinwar's death comes amid heightened tensions and ongoing military engagements in Gaza, as various actors navigate the complexities of the protracted conflict.
