Key CIA Officer in Historic 'Argo' Mission Passes Away; Tunisia Election Controversy & North African Floods Dominate Headlines

CIA officer from 'Argo' mission, Julio Johnson, dies at 81; Tunisia election authority's move sparks NGO concerns.
Edward B. Johnson, known as "Julio," and a key CIA officer in the 1979 'Argo' mission, has passed away at 81. His pivotal role in rescuing six American diplomats during the Tehran Embassy takeover was immortalized in the 2012 film "Argo." Recently unveiled by the CIA in 2023, Johnson was honored with the Intelligence Star for his bravery before retiring in 1995.

Meanwhile, election authorities in Tunisia have blocked accreditation for several civil society groups, including I-Watch and Mourakiboun, over concerns about foreign funding. This decision, ahead of the October 6 presidential election, has sparked criticism of the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) for its alleged bias and lack of independence. President Kais Saied's targeting of NGOs has raised fears about the integrity of the electoral process.

Transitioning to North Africa, torrential rains caused severe floods in Morocco and Algeria over the weekend, resulting in over 20 deaths and widespread damage. Morocco reported 18 fatalities, with 56 homes collapsing and significant infrastructure damage, while Algeria saw at least five deaths and extensive damage to bridges and trains. Both countries are grappling with the aftermath as authorities deploy rescue efforts.

In Libya, the National Oil Corporation (NOC) has declared force majeure on several crude cargoes from the Es Sider port amidst a political standoff involving the central bank and oil revenue. This crisis, which started on August 18, has seen major disruptions with production dropping to about 590,000 barrels per day, although some tankers continue to load crude to meet contractual obligations.

Shifting our focus to Russia, Kremlin critic Vladimir Kara-Murza has urged the West to prevent Vladimir Putin from securing a "face-saving" exit from the Ukraine war. Recently freed in a prisoner swap, Kara-Murza, who served a 25-year sentence for opposing the invasion, declared that ending Putin's regime is vital for peace. In an interview in Paris, he expressed hope for returning to Russia to aid in its reconstruction post-regime change.

Finally, disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein, currently imprisoned, underwent emergency heart surgery at New York's Bellevue Hospital due to his deteriorating health. The 72-year-old, serving a 16-year sentence for rape charges, has seen his 2020 conviction overturned and faces a retrial with potential new charges looming. His condition remains serious as he battles multiple health issues in prison.
