Knife Attack at Hamburg Train Station Leaves Multiple Injured

A woman has been arrested following a stabbing incident that injured at least 12 individuals in Hamburg.
On May 23, 2025, a knife attack occurred at the main train station in Hamburg, Germany, resulting in injuries to at least 12 people, including six individuals sustaining life-threatening injuries, according to emergency services.

The assault took place at approximately 6:00 p.m. local time during the busy rush hour, as travelers were preparing to commute home at the end of the work week.

Hamburg police confirmed via social media that they were conducting a major operation in response to the incident, stating, "A person injured several people with a knife at the main train station" and confirming the arrest of a suspect shortly thereafter.

The arrested individual, a 39-year-old woman, is believed to have acted alone.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, though they did not disclose a potential motive.

The Hamburg fire department reported that among the injured, there are individuals receiving treatment in ambulances on-site and some being treated in waiting trains at the station.

Images from the scene showed police cordoning off access to several platforms, and the German rail operator Deutsche Bahn indicated that four platforms had been closed as a result of the incident.

Passengers were advised that there would be delays and diversions in long-distance services.

This latest attack adds to the pattern of violent incidents occurring in Germany, which has experienced a series of stabbings with suspected jihadist or far-right extremist motivations in recent months.

Notably, just a few days prior to this incident, four people were injured in a stabbing in Bielefeld, where the suspect, following his arrest, expressed jihadist beliefs.

Discussions surrounding security, particularly in connection to immigration, have dominated public discourse in Germany, especially during the recent national elections.

The Conservative CDU/CSU party emerged as a leading choice among voters, while the far-right party Alternative for Germany secured a record high of over 20 percent in the polls, reflecting growing concerns regarding security and social integration in the country.
