Lebanon Installs New Government with Hezbollah's Impact on Key Ministries

Lebanon's newly formed government, headed by Nawaf Salam, features important roles occupied by representatives from Hezbollah and Amal, in the context of increasing international pressure on Israel.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun officially endorsed the newly formed government led by Nawaf Salam on Saturday, following Salam's appointment a month earlier.

The cabinet comprises 24 ministers, including five from Hezbollah and Amal.

One notable appointment is Yassine Jaber, a close associate of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who has taken on the role of Minister of Finance.

Hezbollah and Amal also received the portfolios for Health (Rakan Nassereddine from Hezbollah), Labor (Mohammad Khider from Hezbollah), Environment (Tamara Zain from Amal), and Administrative Development (Fadi Maki from Amal).

In his inaugural speech, Salam highlighted that the differing viewpoints among government members would not obstruct their functions, emphasizing a commitment to collaborative efforts over narrow disagreements.

He reiterated the government's dedication to enacting UN Security Council Resolution 1701, affirming Lebanon's intention to ensure the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from its territory and stressing that nation-building is not merely a promise, but a duty.

Salam, who formerly held the position of President of the International Court of Justice, is known for his criticisms of Israel, having voted against it 210 times during his judicial career, labeling it as a perpetrator of terrorism and apartheid, while abstaining from condemning human rights abuses in nations like Iran and Syria.

The establishment of this new government occurs less than two weeks prior to the deadline for the Israeli military to finish its withdrawal from southern Lebanon by February 18, amid escalating international scrutiny on the matter.
