Microsoft Dismisses Engineers Over Protests Against AI Supply to Israeli Military

Two software engineers fired for expressing concerns about the company’s involvement in military technology amid ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Microsoft has terminated the employment of two software engineers following their protests against the company's provision of artificial intelligence technology to the Israeli military.

Ibtihal Aboussad and Vaniya Agrawal were involved in public demonstrations during the company's recent 50th-anniversary event.

Aboussad was dismissed for what was termed 'willful misconduct, disobedience, or neglect of duty' after he interrupted a presentation by AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman, accusing Microsoft of enabling a military operation that has resulted in high civilian casualties in Gaza.

He stated during the disruption, '50,000 people have died, and Microsoft powers this genocide in our region.' Agrawal disrupted a panel featuring CEO Satya Nadella, former CEO Steve Ballmer, and founder Bill Gates, declaring, 'Shame on all of you.

… Cut ties with Israel.' In the wake of these incidents, Aboussad sent an email to Microsoft executives alleging that the company was suppressing internal dissent regarding its military contracts.

This correspondence included a link to a petition initiated by the group 'No Azure for Apartheid,' which consists of Microsoft employees advocating against the company's associations with Israel.

Microsoft responded, asserting that the actions taken against Aboussad were appropriate in light of his behavior and emphasizing its commitment to ensuring that employee voices are heard in a manner that does not disrupt business operations.

The controversy highlights the growing tensions surrounding corporate involvement in military operations, particularly as the Israeli military employs AI for various purposes, including intelligence analysis and surveillance, amidst a significant escalation of violence in Gaza.

Reports have indicated that since the onset of the current conflict in October 2023, over 50,700 Palestinians have been killed, with a majority being women and children.

Additionally, Israel faces allegations of genocide at the International Court of Justice in relation to its actions in the region.
