Protests surge in response to ICE operations as President Trump orders 2,000 National Guard troops to the region.
In a significant development amid escalating protests against recent immigration raids, President
Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles County.
This decision follows two consecutive days of demonstrations triggered by widespread arrests made during coordinated Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations throughout the city.
The protests erupted particularly after ICE executed search warrants at various locations, including a clothing warehouse in the Fashion District, due to findings that employers were using fraudulent documents.
The protests intensified in locations including Paramount, where demonstrators confronted federal agents stationed outside a Home Depot, and near a federal building in downtown Los Angeles suspected of holding detainees.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), responded to the confrontations with less-than-lethal munitions and tear gas to disperse protesters.
The LAPD has confirmed that several arrests occurred when demonstrators defied orders to disperse and returned to restricted areas.
U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, Bill Essayli, stated that more than a dozen arrests were made, accusing protesters of obstructing federal operations.
President Trump's memo attributed the unrest to “lawlessness that has been allowed to fester” and praised the National Guard for their anticipated role.
However, as of Saturday night, the troops had not yet arrived, though a strong police presence continued to monitor the streets into the early hours of Sunday.
California leaders have voiced strong opposition to the deployment.
Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the move as a political stunt rather than a genuine safety measure, urging protesters to exercise peace and restraint.
Similarly, Senator Adam Schiff criticized Trump's actions, alleging that they are politically motivated and exacerbate tensions rather than quell them.
In addition, President Trump has imposed a new restriction prohibiting masks during demonstrations, emphasizing a crackdown on what he termed “radical leftist protests.”
As the unrest continues, organizers have announced plans for a third day of demonstrations, indicating that the conflict between federal authorities and local communities is ongoing and unresolved.
