Negotiators Focus on Disarmament Talks for Syria's Last Conflict Zone

Diplomatic efforts intensify to address the status of Kurdish forces amidst strategic regional concerns.
ISTANBUL/DAMASCUS: Negotiators from the United States, Turkiye, Syria, and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are currently engaged in intensive discussions aimed at resolving the contentious issue of Kurdish forces in Syria's northeast.

These discussions have involved significant diplomatic and military negotiations, according to sources directly involved in the talks.

A potential agreement could emerge within months, which might see some Kurdish fighters leaving Syria's restive northeast, while others could be integrated under Syria's new defense ministry, as per sources.

The talks, however, have encountered complex challenges, such as integrating the well-armed SDF fighters into Syria's security framework and managing territories rich in oil and wheat.

SDF commander Mazloum Abdi emphasized a demand for decentralized administration in an interview, indicating potential challenges to the central authority in Damascus.

Meanwhile, Syria's new defense minister, Murhaf Abu Qasra, countered this by expressing a desire for a unified military command.

The United States' policy under the new administration remains a significant factor, particularly regarding the continuation of Washington's support for Kurdish allies.

Any agreement will also depend on Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's stance on potential military actions against the Kurdish YPG, which Turkiye considers a national security threat due to its links with the PKK.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has indicated that Turkiye expects the disarmament of armed groups and the end of 'foreign terrorist fighters' in Syria for lasting stability.

Discussions between US and Turkish officials have been ongoing since a lightning offensive from Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham led to the ouster of Bashar Assad on December 8.

Parallel negotiations continue amongst various groups, including the US, SDF, and HTS.

The fragile situation in the region, where the SDF controls nearly a quarter of Syria, remains volatile.

Turkey's influence is notably significant within the dynamics of the conflict, given its direct support for rebel factions.

Efforts to stabilize Syria following a 13-year civil war involve numerous geopolitical players, including Russia, Iran, and Israel.

Recent clashes in northern Syria highlight the urgency of finding a consensus, with reports of casualties resulting from conflicts and Turkish airstrikes.

Ultimately, the future of Kurdish factions in Syria could significantly affect ongoing efforts to resolve the PKK's insurgency in Turkiye.

A political solution is necessary to prevent further destabilization in the region, as emphasized by United Nations warnings.

US support remains a point of tension in its relations with NATO ally Turkiye.

Ongoing debates surround the management of Daesh detainees and the fate of foreign fighters.

The evolving geopolitical landscape could shape the potential outcomes of these high-stakes negotiations.
