Netanyahu Appoints New Shin Bet Chief Amid Legal and Military Controversy

David Zini steps in as the head of Israel's internal security agency, eliciting criticism from legal authorities and the military leadership.
On Thursday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the appointment of David Zini as the new head of the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), succeeding Ronen Bar.

This decision has drawn criticism from Israel's legal advisor, Gali Baharav-Miara, as well as from military leaders.

Baharav-Miara stated that Netanyahu violated legal protocols in the appointment of the new Shin Bet chief, expressing concerns about potential conflicts of interest linked to the decision.

In an earlier statement, the legal advisor recommended that a new head of Shin Bet not be appointed until legal frameworks ensuring proper procedures were established.

Furthermore, Israeli public broadcaster reported that military leadership was taken aback by Netanyahu's choice to appoint a new Shin Bet head, receiving the announcement with discontent.

According to sources, Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir was informed just three minutes prior to the official announcement about Zini's appointment and had not been consulted beforehand.

Ronen Bar, the outgoing Shin Bet chief, had previously announced his intention to leave his position by mid-June.

In March, Netanyahu made the initial decision to dismiss Bar, which precipitated a political and legal crisis.

However, in late April, the Israeli government reversed the dismissal following a suspension of the decision by the Supreme Court.
