Neuralink Chip Enables Paralyzed Patient to Write Social Media Post by Thinking

For the first time, Noland Arbo, the inaugural patient to receive an electronic chip from the tech-medical firm Neuralink, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, has authored a social media post on the "X" network purely through his thoughts.
Musk, in resharing the original message, commented, "The very first post made through thought, using the telepathic device (Neuralink)."

Noland Arbo, 29, shared that he had been quadriplegic following an accident nearly eight years ago, leaving him unable to feel anything below his shoulders.

On January 28th, Neuralink placed a brain implant in a human for the first time. Musk stated on his online platform "X" that the patient was recovering well post-procedure.

Musk tweeted, "Preliminary results show promising discoveries in neural cell stimulation."

This step by Neuralink aims to enable individuals to control their smartphones using thoughts, in addition to operating other technologies.

In May, Neuralink was granted a license to use its flat, circular implant in a clinical trial with humans after previous tests on monkeys.

The implant, containing 1024 electrodes, is connected to the brain by a robot using an ultra-fine needle. For the clinical trial, Neuralink sought patients suffering from quadriplegia; paralysis in both arms and legs. When individuals attempt to move, a specific part of the brain becomes active.

The electrodes capture these signals which are presumed to be sufficient for imagining a movement to, for example, operate a computer cursor.

Even with successful surgeries, patients might require months to learn how to control the computer using their thoughts. Neuralink’s clinical trial is designed to last for six years.

Research on brain-computer interfaces of this kind has been underway for years, and various implants have already been installed in some individuals. Neuralink also faces numerous competitors hoping to commercially utilize this technology.
