14-year-old Omar Mohammad Rabea reportedly killed by Israeli settler, prompting accusations of 'extrajudicial killing' by Palestinian officials.
A Palestinian teenager, Omar Mohammad Rabea, who held US citizenship, was reported shot dead in the West Bank town of Turmus Ayya on Sunday.
Palestinian officials indicated that Rabea, aged 14, was killed by an Israeli settler.
The Israeli military, however, described the incident as a counterterrorism action, stating that soldiers shot a 'terrorist' who was allegedly endangering civilians by throwing rocks at passing vehicles.
Mayor of Turmus Ayya, Adeeb Lafi, asserted that Rabea was shot alongside two other teenagers at the entrance of the town.
He claimed the Israeli army declared Rabea dead after detaining him.
The Palestinian foreign ministry condemned the incident, labeling it an 'extrajudicial killing' and attributed it to what they describe as Israel’s 'continued impunity'.
The Israeli army stated that during a counterterrorism operation in Turmus Ayya, soldiers identified three individuals who were reportedly throwing rocks towards a highway, posing a risk to civilian drivers.
The military's statement indicated that fire was directed towards these individuals, resulting in the death of one and injuries to the others.
The situation in the West Bank has become increasingly tense amid a surge of violence, with reports of near-daily confrontations between Israeli forces and armed Palestinians, as well as increasing incidents of violence by Israeli settlers.
This escalation has coincided with the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which began in October 2023. Reports indicate that settler activities, including raids on Bedouin communities and incursions into occupied territories, have intensified during this period.
European nations, along with the previous US administration under President
Joe Biden, had instituted sanctions against violent Israeli settlers; however, these sanctions were lifted during
Donald Trump's presidency.
In recent weeks, the Israeli military has also conducted what it termed a 'large-scale military operation' in the West Bank aimed at combatting militant activities.
The militant group Hamas, operating from Gaza, has reportedly increased its influence in the West Bank, where the Palestinian Authority, led by the rival Fatah faction, maintains limited authority.
