Plan to conduct 10,000 COVID tests over the next two weeks
Having tested about 9 per cent of the population, which includes all of Little Cayman and the majority of Cayman Brac, the Cayman Islands now ranks 10th in the world for testing.
In two weeks, a total of 10,000 test results are expected to be completed which will help guide decisions and further easing up of other businesses and activities.
The Health Services Authority has expanded its testing capacity for COVID-19 screenings with the opening of two drive-through screening tents for frontline workers and has also expanded physical laboratory space at the Cayman Islands Hospital, partnered with a private lab and has hired and trained additional laboratory staff in order to increase testing capacity.
Public Health is scheduling appointments for testing with frontline workers and a percentage of construction workers. HSA, Public Health and the Chief Medical Officer are working together to prioritise persons or business who are deemed as essential frontline workers.
Whilst it is estimated that the construction industry and supporting services comprise some 8,000 people; the strategy is to test at least 3,200 construction workers within 2 weeks starting the week of May 18. Once 40% of the construction population is tested and if the results continue to show low community spread, the government then anticipates the rest of the construction industry to commence work on June 1 or as soon thereafter as possible.
