The negotiation teams of Trump and Putin meet directly, establishing the groundwork for a significant advance.

Delegations from the U.S. and Russia gather in Riyadh to explore the possibility of resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had earlier emphasized that Kyiv would not endorse any discussions lacking Ukrainian representation. The question remains, can those in need truly be selective?
On Tuesday, senior officials from the United States and Russia convened at the Diriyah Palace in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to discuss their bilateral relations and the potential resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.

The U.S. delegation was led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, accompanied by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

Heading the Russian delegation was Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, with Kremlin foreign affairs advisor Yuri Ushakov also present.

Saudi officials, including Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan and National Security Advisor Musaed al Alban, participated in the initial portion of the discussions before leaving.

The conversations took place without any representatives from Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously indicated that Kyiv would not endorse any outcomes from the discussions that did not involve Ukrainian officials.

Russian representatives affirmed that the talks were intended to be strictly bilateral.

This meeting signifies a rise in high-level interactions between the United States and Russia nearly three years into the Ukraine conflict, during which their relations have severely declined.

Prior interactions included a brief exchange between Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and then-U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken at a G-20 meeting in India nearly two years ago, along with a meeting involving U.S. and Russian intelligence officials in Turkey in the fall of 2022.

In related comments, Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, stressed the importance of strong U.S.-Russia relations in tackling global challenges.

International reactions to the recent discussions have included calls from European leaders for the greater inclusion of Ukrainian viewpoints, prompting France to organize an emergency meeting with European Union countries and the United Kingdom.

French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated the necessity for a cessation of hostilities and for security guarantees for Ukraine.

The gathering in Riyadh comes after a series of diplomatic efforts and highlights ongoing attempts by U.S. and Russian officials to seek out solutions to the conflict.

All developments continue to be closely observed by international stakeholders.
