Israeli Army Chief Steps Down Due to October 7 Security Breach

Herzi Halevi steps down, accepting responsibility for the Hamas attack, as public outrage mounts over the security lapse and its repercussions.
On Tuesday, Israel's army chief, Herzi Halevi, declared his resignation, effective March 6, 2024, following the devastating Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Halevi took full responsibility for the security lapse that resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis and the capture of approximately 250 hostages.

He acknowledged that Israel's military had failed in its duty to safeguard citizens that day, a burden he feels deeply.

In his resignation letter to Defence Minister Israel Katz, Halevi pledged a comprehensive investigation into the breach, with findings to be publicly disclosed where feasible. Despite public discontent, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration has resisted calls for a state inquiry into the management of the attack.

Halevi’s resignation is part of a broader series of changes in military leadership following the October attack, with several high-ranking officers, including the leaders of Israel's Navy and Air Force, anticipated to resign.

Halevi’s actions during the ongoing Gaza war have faced criticism, notably from hardliners such as Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who held Halevi accountable for the attack and the military's handling of the Gaza conflict.

Despite these challenges, Halevi's time in office also included notable military achievements, such as diminishing Hamas' military strength. The ongoing conflict has claimed the lives of more than 46,000 Palestinians and led to significant destruction in Gaza.

Halevi's resignation occurs amid a complex political environment and renewed efforts to tackle military and strategic challenges in the region.

His successor has yet to be named, with a systematic search for a new IDF chief currently in progress.
