The United Nations announced on Monday that nine employees of its agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) have been terminated for their alleged involvement in the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel.

This attack triggered a war in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of 1,197 people and the capture of 251 hostages.

UN spokesman Farhan Haq confirmed the terminations following an investigation conducted by the UN's oversight body into claims made by Israel.

The allegations led to several governments, including top donor the United States, suspending funding to UNRWA.

Farhan Haq mentioned that further steps are required for full corroboration.

Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas, with its operations in Gaza causing over 39,550 deaths.

UNRWA, operational since 1949, has faced criticism from Israel.

Earlier this year, UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini called for an end to attacks on the agency's staff and resources.
