On Saturday, an Israeli airstrike struck a school where displaced Palestinians were sheltering in Gaza City, killing at least 90 people and prompting international outcry.

In response, Israel expanded evacuation orders in Khan Younis, a city in the southern Gaza Strip, displacing tens of thousands of Palestinian residents overnight.

Israeli military operations targeted Hamas and Islamic Jihad operatives who reportedly used these areas to stage attacks and fire rockets.

The conflict has led to nearly 40,000 Palestinian deaths and displaced most of Gaza's 2.3 million residents.

The Israeli military contends that many of the fatalities are combatants, while Gaza health officials state most are civilians.

The conflict began following a deadly incursion by Hamas fighters into southern Israel on October 7, 2022.
