Russia Removes Taliban from Terrorist List, U.S. and South Korea Strengthen Defense Ties Amid Global Tensions

Russia plans to delist the Taliban as terrorists, signaling changed relations, while the U.S. and South Korea agree on an adjusted defense cost-sharing plan amid rising global tensions.
In a significant diplomatic move, Russia is set to remove the Taliban from its list of terrorist organizations, highlighting a shift in relations as Moscow acknowledges them as allies in counter-terrorism efforts. While this change is still subject to legal procedures, it marks a notable evolution since the Taliban's rise to power in 2021.

Meanwhile, across the globe, the United States and South Korea have unveiled a new defense cost-sharing plan, with South Korea's contribution increasing by 8.3% to over a billion dollars for 2026. This agreement, reached after extensive negotiations, ensures that from 2027 to 2030, cost increases will be modest and linked to inflation.

As countries navigate these geopolitical shifts, the Nobel Prize announcements begin, poised to address global crises, peace endeavors, and possibly artificial intelligence. With the Peace Prize set for Friday, there's anticipation around which grassroots groups may be spotlighted amid escalating global conflicts.

Shifting to Europe, travelers in Germany might face delays and cancellations due to a technical glitch in the country's air traffic control system. Frankfurt Airport, Germany's busiest, advises passengers to stay informed about their flight status, as efforts to fix the issue are underway.

Closer to the Middle East, Lebanon is grappling with a humanitarian crisis as displacement shelters fill to capacity with those fleeing Israeli strikes. This has left many without adequate shelter, underscoring the dire situation for displaced individuals, including vulnerable migrant workers.

In the Red Sea, tensions escalate with a Houthi drone attack on the oil tanker Cordelia Moon, showcasing ongoing regional unrest. Although the strike claimed no major injuries, it signals a broader pattern of Houthi military actions, further complicating the already volatile situation in the area.
