Saudi Arabia Advances Green Agenda at COP28 Forum

Saudi Arabia Advances Green Agenda at COP28 Forum

Saudi Arabia is actively pursuing environmental sustainability, particularly during the upcoming COP28 climate summit in Dubai.
The nation will host the third Saudi Green Initiative Forum on December 4, aligned with COP28, to underscore its commitment to a sustainable future amid its ambitious giga-projects.

The forum will feature prominent figures and experts discussing strategies to combat climate change and will highlight Saudi's Green Initiative (SGI) progress, a framework initiated by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2021 to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Under Vision 2030, SGI targets include reducing emissions by 278 million tons per year by 2030, planting 600 million trees, restoring 3.8 million hectares of land, and promoting biodiversity through a 10-billion-tree campaign.

The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification leads these conservation efforts, aiming to expand vegetation and initiate pioneering environmental solutions in partnership with various sectors.

Saudi Arabia, a major oil producer, aims to drive the Middle East Green Initiative to address regional climate change and meet global commitments. Despite geographical challenges like scarce freshwater sources, the Kingdom forges ahead with reforestation without utilizing desalination water, favoring renewable sources for irrigation.

Recent developments include the Al Henakiyah solar power plant project, a collaborative effort by Masdar, EDF Renewables, and Nesma Company, set to generate over 1.8 million tons of CO2 savings annually. This initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's renewable energy aspirations.

The SGI Forum at COP28 will serve as a platform to discuss Saudi Arabia's climate goals and challenges, spotlighting the nation's contributions to global environmental efforts.
