Turkey's Strategic Role in Post-Assad Syria

Turkey's Strategic Role in Post-Assad Syria

Turkey's Influence Expands Following the Fall of Bashar Assad
In the aftermath of the removal of Syrian President Bashar Assad, Turkey has emerged as a critical influence in shaping the future of Syria.

A significant player during the Syrian conflict, Turkey supported rebel groups under the Syrian National Army banner, aimed at ending Assad's rule.

This involvement, combined with historical and geographical ties, has positioned Turkey as a key diplomatic and economic partner in post-conflict Syria.

With a 911 km border shared with Syria, Turkey became a pivotal host for those fleeing the civil strife, sheltering approximately 3 million Syrians.

This role underscores Turkey's importance not only as a sanctuary but also as a vital conduit for humanitarian aid into the region.

Turkey has conducted multiple military campaigns since 2016, in collaboration with Syrian allies, targeting Kurdish factions in the northeast that Turkey perceives as national security threats.

In the changing Syrian political landscape, Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), previously linked to Al-Qaeda, now holds sway and maintains a cooperative relationship with Ankara.

This alliance offers Turkey new opportunities for economic collaboration and reconstruction initiatives, alongside addressing security challenges posed by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) along the border.

Considered an arm of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) by Ankara, the YPG’s presence remains a critical subject of Turkish foreign policy.

Efforts are underway to reconcile the YPG issue, amidst broader regional aspirations.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), led by the YPG, have opened dialogue with Turkish-backed factions, indicating possible troop withdrawals contingent on peace agreements.

Concurrently, diplomatic negotiations are persistent, with high-level Turkish visits to Damascus, emphasizing intentions to assist in reconstruction and other cooperative measures in Syria.

Turkey’s overtures towards Syria include infrastructure aid and constitutional support, amid efforts encouraging Syrian refugees' voluntary return.

The geopolitical complexities continue to evolve, with regional and international dialogues playing pivotal roles in determining Syria’s next chapter.
