Twitter to let users charge monthly fee for exclusive content in new Super Follows feature

Twitter to let users charge monthly fee for exclusive content in new Super Follows feature

The social media site is looking to earn more cash by adopting a similar model to the likes of Patreon.

Twitter is to let people charge their followers for extra content with a new feature called Super Follows.

It could unlock special tweets, newsletters, videos, or deals and discounts that are not available to other users.

The move follows the success of sites such as Patreon and Only Fans, which allow people to charge for different levels of content and have proved lucrative for some social media personalities.

A monthly fee will unlock special content.

Users would pay a monthly fee under the Super Follows system, but Twitter did not say how much of a cut it would take.

The feature has not launched yet - more details are expected in the coming months.

"Exploring audience funding opportunities like Super Follows will allow creators and publishers to be directly supported by their audience and will incentivize them to continue creating content that their audience loves," Twitter said.

Investors have longed pushed for the company to launch a subscription-based model to boost revenue.

Another new feature is Communities which, similar to Facebook Groups, will allow people to join a group based around a particular interest or place and see relevant tweets.

"We're working to create a product experience that makes it easier for people to form, discover, and participate in conversations that are more targeted to the relevant communities or geographies they're invested in," said the company.

A launch date for Communities is also still to be announced.

Twitter revealed the new features in an investor presentation on Thursday, where it also said its revenue goal for 2023 was $7.5bn, more than double its 2020 revenue of $3.7bn.
