Türkiye Renews Support to Presidential Council to Achieve Stability in Libya
Türkiye reiterated its support on Monday to efforts aimed at reaching stability and peace in Libya to pave the way for staging the delayed parliamentary and presidential elections.
Turkish President Recep Tayyib Erdogan met with Chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council Mohamed al-Menfi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Monday.
Anadolu Agency reported that the officials discussed the latest political developments in the North African country, including the elections and national reconciliation.
Libyan Foreign Minister in the Government of National Unity (GNU) Najla Mangoush, Libya’s UN representative Taher al-Sunni, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and Ankara’s UN representative Feridun Sinirlioglu attended the talks.
Türkiye had recently declared that it was seeking to build good relations with all Libyan parties.
It revealed that it will send a parliamentary delegation to visit Tripoli and the country’s east.
Last week, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu stressed Ankara was keen on forging relations with various Libyan parties to achieve Libya’s security and stability.
Türkiye has sought to balance its policy between western and eastern Libya, while still supporting the Tripoli-based GNU, which is headed by Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah.
It also enjoys good ties with Fathi Bashagha, Dbeibah’s rival prime minister who was elected by the east-based parliament earlier this year.
Türkiye had sought to bridge the divide between the officials by hosting them in September.
