U.S. and Israel Plan to End UNIFIL Operations in Southern Lebanon

Discussions on the future of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon reflect shifting security assessments in the region.
Recent reports indicate that the United States and Israel have initiated discussions to terminate the operations of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

This decision arises from evaluations of the current security landscape and the effectiveness of UNIFIL, which has been deployed in southern Lebanon for 47 years.

Sources suggest that the U.S. aims to reduce costs associated with maintaining the peacekeeping force, which has been a subject of scrutiny regarding its operational efficacy.

In the lead-up to this reported decision, extensive political and security consultations have taken place, focusing on whether UNIFIL's presence remains necessary.

Criticism has been directed at the force for not adequately fulfilling its mandate, particularly regarding the disarmament of Hezbollah, which is outlined in United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.

Traditionally, Israel viewed the presence of UNIFIL, despite its perceived limitations, as preferable to a complete withdrawal.

However, this assessment has reportedly shifted as the Israeli security apparatus has observed increased activities by the Lebanese Army against Hezbollah's military capabilities since the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in the fall.

UNIFIL operations are authorized by the UN Security Council and are subject to annual renewal, with discussions typically taking place in August.

France currently serves as a sponsor of the force and is expected to advocate for its continuation in the forthcoming debates.

According to informed sources, a potential compromise may involve a gradual reduction of UNIFIL's activities, with final decisions resting with U.S. leadership.

The evolving situation reflects the complex dynamics of regional security and international peacekeeping efforts.
