UN Investigates Exploitation in Chad Refugee Camps as Middle Eastern and US Tensions Unfold

UN probes alleged sexual exploitation of Sudanese refugees in Chad, while Israeli NGO warns of "quiet annexation" in the West Bank.
In Chad, the UN is deeply concerned as reports surface about alleged sexual exploitation of Sudanese refugees by aid workers and security forces. This follows distressing accounts from women and girls in refugee sites, prompting an internal probe and heightened alert to combat such abuses in a high-risk region.

Meanwhile, tensions are on the rise in the West Bank, with an Israeli NGO warning of a "quiet annexation" amid increasing conflicts. The report by ACRI points to excessive force, settler violence, and legislative moves that threaten democratic values and Palestinian representation, shifting concerns from other regional issues.

Turning to Turkiye, the UAE has expressed gratitude for the quick arrest of suspects linked to the murder of Rabbi Zvi Kogan. The joint efforts highlight a commitment to justice, with the UAE emphasizing its dedication to tolerance and peace among varied religious and cultural communities.

In the U.S., legal developments continue as a federal case against President-elect Trump for document mishandling has been dismissed, yet his associates still face charges. Despite this decision, ongoing legal battles in New York and Georgia over business and racketeering allegations remain, with potential delays during his presidency.

On a hopeful note, a US-brokered truce promises a 60-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah starting Wednesday. The agreement seeks to de-escalate hostilities, with Israeli forces set to withdraw from southern Lebanon and Lebanese troops taking their place.

Lastly, Trump's proposed 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports could lead to higher U.S. consumer prices, caution experts. While the tariffs aim to pressure these countries on immigration and drug issues, they may primarily serve as negotiation leverage, raising concerns over living costs and trade disruptions.
