Understanding Breast Lumps: Not All Are Cancerous

Understanding Breast Lumps: Not All Are Cancerous

In an enlightening revelation by Dr. Karishma Kirti, a breast disease specialist and oncology surgeon based in Mumbai, it's crucial to acknowledge that not every lump, pain, or discharge in the breast signifies cancer.
In fact, Dr. Kirti points out that 8 out of 10 breast lumps are benign, meaning they are non-cancerous.

According to Dr. Kirti, benign tumors generally grow slower, feel softer, and are more mobile within the breast, as reported by the specialized medical website OnlyMyHealth.

Breast Cancer Symptoms

Breast cancer often presents itself as a painless, hard lump that grows over time. There may also be changes to the skin such as persistent redness, tightening, or even non-healing wounds. Noteworthy changes in the nipple, including scaling, discharge, or inversion, should also prompt attention.

In very rare cases, breast cancer can manifest as swelling in the armpit or neck without any noticeable changes in the breast.

Distinguishing Cancerous from Non-cancerous Lumps

Dr. Kirti emphasizes the importance of regular self-exams and clinical check-ups as first-line defenses. If any changes in the breast tissue are noticed, she advises against panic and recommends consulting a doctor without delay. She stresses:

- There is no sure way to differentiate between cancerous and non-cancerous lumps at home, or even in a clinic without undergoing some tests.

- More often than not, there might not be a cause for cancer.

Treatment Options

Treatment options for breast cancer have significantly improved in recent years, offering hope and better outcomes for patients. When asked about available treatment options, Dr. Kirti explains that the treatment approach depends on various factors such as the type and stage of the cancer, as well as patient preferences and health conditions. Treatment options may include conservative surgery to preserve the breast or mastectomy, sometimes alongside reconstructive surgery. Additional treatments like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy may be used to eliminate cancer cells and prevent recurrence.

Dr. Kirti concludes by underscoring the importance of being aware of symptoms, undergoing regular medical check-ups, and thus prioritizing breast health as a key method in tackling the disease and ensuring a cancer-free future.
