Vice President Harris Interacts with Bahraini Leaders to Enhance Bilateral Ties and Regional Security

Vice President Harris Interacts with Bahraini Leaders to Enhance Bilateral Ties and Regional Security

The Vice President's conversations with King Hamad and Crown Prince Salman emphasize U.S.-Bahrain collaboration, concentrating on defense, trade, and regional stability.
On January 10, 2025, Vice President Kamala Harris had separate phone conversations with King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa of Bahrain.

The talks underscored the enduring U.S.-Bahrain relationship, focusing on joint efforts to enhance cooperation in areas like defense, trade, and regional stability.

The Vice President also expressed her regret for being unable to visit Bahrain due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, but reaffirmed her commitment to ongoing collaboration with Bahrain.

Strengthening U.S.-Bahrain Relations
During the discussions, Vice President Harris reiterated the strong and lasting bilateral relationship between the U.S. and Bahrain, which has been a key aspect of U.S. policy in the Gulf region.

This relationship has grown under the Biden-Harris Administration, especially with the 2023 signing of the Comprehensive Security Integration and Prosperity Agreement (C-SIPA).

C-SIPA, initially proposed during a meeting between the Vice President and Crown Prince Salman in March 2022, has become a significant achievement in the region, boosting cooperation on defense, trade, science, and emerging technology.

The Vice President expressed her pride in the C-SIPA framework, highlighting its potential as a model for future regional integration.

The agreement has paved the way for deeper economic and security ties between the U.S. and Bahrain, along with the United Kingdom's recent decision to join C-SIPA.

This development underscores the agreement's wider appeal and sets a precedent for further collaboration between the U.S. and its regional allies.

In their conversations, both leaders agreed on the importance of building upon this foundation to tackle common challenges and advance shared objectives.

Security and Military Cooperation
A central element of the U.S.-Bahrain partnership is the security cooperation between the two nations.

Bahrain hosts the U.S. 5th Fleet and U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, making it a crucial partner in ensuring maritime security and regional stability.

Vice President Harris expressed her gratitude for Bahrain's vital role in hosting these U.S. military assets, which are key to maintaining a strong U.S. presence in the Gulf and the broader Middle East.

Bahrain's strategic location and its support for U.S. defense initiatives have been essential in addressing the security threats posed by regional actors, including Iran.

The Vice President and the Bahraini leaders discussed the importance of continuing to collaborate to ensure the security of critical waterways, protect international trade, and counter regional security threats.

Moreover, the Vice President highlighted the need to further enhance regional stability through collaboration with partners such as Bahrain.

This aligns with the Biden-Harris Administration's broader strategy to reinforce alliances and build coalitions that promote peace, security, and prosperity in the Middle East.

Middle East Developments and Regional Cooperation
In addition to security issues, the Vice President and the Bahraini leaders discussed the latest developments in the Middle East.

These discussions occurred amidst heightened geopolitical tension in the region, particularly concerning ongoing conflicts and the broader security landscape.

The Vice President reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to working toward a future of peace, dignity, and security for all people in the region, with an emphasis on increased integration, connectivity, and prosperity.

One key area of focus in the conversation was Bahrain's role in promoting interfaith tolerance and fostering a more inclusive society.

Vice President Harris praised Bahrain's leadership for its efforts to promote religious tolerance and coexistence, noting the country's commitment to ensuring that people of all faiths can live together in peace.

This reflects Bahrain's broader vision of a stable, prosperous society where diversity is embraced and where regional cooperation extends beyond just security and trade.

As part of these discussions, Vice President Harris reiterated the importance of continuing to build bridges between regional powers and supporting initiatives that promote sustainable development, human rights, and peaceful coexistence across the Middle East.

Future Cooperation and Regional Integration
Looking forward, Vice President Harris emphasized the potential for further cooperation between the U.S. and Bahrain, particularly through initiatives like C-SIPA, which could serve as a model for deeper regional integration.

As the U.S. continues to prioritize partnerships in the Middle East, the conversations with Bahrain's leadership underscored the critical role of the Gulf region in ensuring both global stability and economic prosperity.

In their discussions, both Vice President Harris and the Bahraini leaders expressed their shared commitment to deepening ties in various sectors, from defense and trade to regional peace and security.

This reflects the Biden-Harris Administration's broader vision for the Middle East, emphasizing not only military cooperation but also economic development, humanitarian support, and the promotion of democratic values.
