The announcement is anchored in the traditional lunar-based system used across much of the Islamic world, where official moon sighting determines the start of key religious months rather than fixed solar dates.

What is confirmed is that Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, is scheduled according to the Islamic lunar calendar and is directly linked to the timing of the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.

The festival falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar, and marks the culmination of the annual pilgrimage rituals performed by millions of Muslims in Saudi Arabia each year.

Saudi Arabia’s confirmation is significant because the Kingdom hosts Mecca and Medina, the two holiest cities in Islam, and its moon-sighting announcements are widely followed by governments and religious authorities across many countries.

While some states rely on local astronomical calculations or independent sightings, a large portion of the global Muslim population aligns its observance of Eid al-Adha with Saudi Arabia’s official declaration.

Islamic months begin with the sighting of the new crescent moon, meaning the Gregorian calendar date of Eid al-Adha shifts each year by approximately ten to eleven days.

This creates a moving seasonal cycle in which the festival rotates through different times of the year over a multi-decade period.

Eid al-Adha itself is one of the two major Islamic festivals and commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, an act that is symbolically reenacted through the ritual sacrifice of livestock.

The meat is traditionally distributed among family, friends, and those in need, reinforcing the festival’s emphasis on charity and social solidarity.

In Saudi Arabia, the festival is closely tied to the conclusion of the Hajj pilgrimage, one of the largest annual religious gatherings in the world.

Because the Islamic calendar is not fixed to the solar year, the exact Gregorian date of Eid al-Adha varies annually and is typically confirmed only after official moon sighting committees verify the start of Dhu al-Hijjah.

This process ensures religious compliance within Islamic jurisprudence but also introduces short-term uncertainty for planners and institutions.

The 2026 confirmation therefore functions as both a religious and administrative anchor point, allowing governments and communities to coordinate observance, travel, and public holidays in advance.
