Red Cross Launches Jeddah Air Bridge to Expedite Sudan Relief Efforts

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has initiated a strategic air bridge operation from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to accelerate humanitarian aid delivery to Sudan.
In response to escalating humanitarian needs in Sudan, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has established an air bridge operation utilizing its RED aircraft based at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah.

This strategic move aims to expedite the movement of humanitarian personnel and supplies critical for supporting ongoing operations within Sudan.Jeddah's proximity to Port Sudan, approximately one hour away by air, positions it as a highly efficient operational hub for the ICRC.

By leveraging this location, the organization enhances its capacity to rapidly deploy staff into, out of, and across Sudan, thereby improving the effectiveness and speed of humanitarian responses.ICRC's regional director for Africa, Patrick Youssef, emphasized the urgency of these actions, stating that every day is crucial in addressing the vast humanitarian needs present in Sudan.

Operating from Jeddah significantly enhances the ICRC’s ability to maintain a swift deployment capability, sustain operations close to affected communities, and continue providing vital protection and assistance to those most impacted by the ongoing conflict. The ICRC expressed its gratitude to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Sudan for their support in establishing this air bridge arrangement.

This collaboration is expected to bolster the ICRC’s response capabilities, enabling more effective and timely aid delivery. With a presence in Sudan since 1978, the ICRC works alongside the Sudanese Red Crescent Society to deliver assistance and protection to individuals affected by conflict and violence.

The organization's activities encompass support for health services and water infrastructure, family link restoration efforts, and advocacy for respect of International Humanitarian Law.
