President Donald Trump welcomed Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the White House on Tuesday, underscoring a close strategic partnership and reinforcing the kingdom’s role as a key U.S. ally.

The arrival of the de facto Saudi leader was met with full ceremonial honours including a six-jet flyover and gunfire salute on the South Lawn of the White House.

In remarks during the joint engagement, Trump described the crown prince as “a very good friend” and emphasised the two nations’ alignment across “every issue,” while the Saudi leader reiterated his commitment to bilateral cooperation and framed his agenda as one of regional stability and investment.

Trump also defended his guest’s record during media exchanges, dismissing questions about the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi with the remark, “things happen.”

The meeting is set against a broader framework of major U.S.–Saudi negotiations including an announced plan for the United States to sell advanced F-35 stealth jets to the kingdom—the first such potential sale to a Middle Eastern country outside Israel.

Discussions also include multibillion-dollar Saudi investment in U.S. artificial-intelligence infrastructure and related commercial ventures.

The visit marks the crown prince’s first return to Washington since 2018.

Beyond optics, the visit underscores President Trump’s emphasis on transactional diplomacy: deepening economic ties, reinforcing defence partnerships and aligning with Gulf states as part of a broader regional realignment.

For Saudi Arabia, the encounter represents a diplomatic reset as it seeks to accelerate its “Vision 2030” reforms and strengthen its global economic footprint.

The stage is set for a flurry of announcements, signalling that both capitals view this meeting as a linchpin in their shared strategic agenda.
